Minecraft sold for $2.5 Billion to Microsoft

I have to say I’m terribly disappointed that Mojang sold Minecraft to Microsoft. While I’m happy for Notch and the rest of the gang for their rags to riches story, I truly believe this is the death knell for Minecraft. It may not happen tomorrow, or next week, or even within a couple of month, but I firmly believe that Microsoft is going to strangle the life out of Minecraft. I don’t see them continuing the Java development nor do I see them continuing their cross-platform development. Microsoft isn’t a fan of Java so turning Minecraft into a C# app seems the next step. This of course will kill it off the Mac version and derail any future iOS development. I’m sure Microsoft has no interest in keeping the Android development going. It seems like Minecraft will be developed for the desktop with all the bloat that comes with .NET development. Additionally, Minecraft will be pushed to the Xbox One […]

Now I’ve brought MediaMonkey into the mix

I used MediaMonkey a long time ago and thought it was pretty good, but it slipped from my mind because my music collection really wasn’t worthy of such things. Well, that was then. Now, my collection has grown a little unruly. It includes both my own CD collection (remember those?) and a slew of digital downloads in MP3 format. As I’m moving files around I see my Audio stash is now 50GB. That includes a slew of audiobooks (Librovox has some awesome stuff), tutorials, training and music. Things have gotten a lot more complicated. I brought in MediaMonkey to try and fix all the tags and organize the files so I can make sense of them and which album, course, or book they belong to. Much to my surprise MediaMonkey is way more than just an MP3 tagging tool. It has a slew of features I didn’t know anything about. Alright then, let’s see what happens when I unleash this […]

Microsoft in talks to buy Minecraft for estimated $2 billion

So, I’m seeing all these stories pop up with news of Microsoft putting an offer of $2 billion on the table to buy Minecraft creator Mojang. That is a serious amount of money I don’t care who you are, and if this goes through, it would be an amazing rags to riches story for Markus Persson (Notch). Just think of it, he develops this game to make a little money on the side and not only does it catch on, it turns into a phenomenon. It’s not just some little game that kids are playing, adults flock to the banner and start to build some amazing structures that rival the pyramids of Egypt. Not only that, the game gets modded like crazy so that not only do you have infinite blocks, you get infinite variety. And he did it all without the help of any big publishing company. Notch didn’t turn to the likes of EA or anyone else and […]

Building a Media Center with Audials One

Now that I’m making progress on organizing all the files on my drives, I need some way to actually find them. Like I said, I now have 14 drives connected to a single system so finding the right movie, TV episode or song is a bit of a challenge. Yes, I can drill down once I find the right drive, but I want something a little simpler. Audials is helping me with that part of the task. I’ve sent Audials to scan every drive in my system looking for video and music files. That alone took a hot minute, but now that it’s done, I can type in the name or partial name of a file and find what I’m looking for without having to search every drive. I have a mixture of .wma, .mp3, .avi, .mkv and .mp4 and Audials handles each file type without issue. Things seem to be working pretty well so far. I’m still moving files […]

First Hand Experience With Piriform Recuva

I found myself in a jam the other day as I was moving hundreds of gigs around to the new drives I bought. There was a bit of a mis-click and instead of copying a folder of images from one drive to another, I deleted it. And not to the Recycle Bin either. My setting in XYPlorer is to bypass that and just get rid of the files. This is one of the very rare times when the Recycle Bin would have saved me. But I didn’t fret, I jumped over to my trusted set of disk utilities and use the Undelete function inside Ashampoo to get the file back. That would have been a great end to the story, but none of the Ashampoo tools recognize my 5TB dive. Or something else is wrong, but it couldn’t read any information off the drive. Oh crap, now what? Alright, no need to panic, plenty of tools out there to choose […]
