Some fun new titles hit the Steam Store while others go on Sale

Some interesting new titles are available on the Steam Store just in time for the weekend. First up, we have a new version of Gauntlet! For those of us who remember the 4 person standup coin game this could be good news! This was one of my favorites from back in the day and nothing has really come close to modeling that same experience. I’m not sure if the new Gauntlet is that game, but I’m still excited to see it out there. The game has just released so the votes are still coming in. For $20, let’s hope this is a steal of a title. Anyone remember Moorhuhn? If you’re scratching you’re head just move on. But those who remember this from the old Johnnie Walker advertisement should be amused to hear there is another installment – Moorhuhn Tiger and Chicken. This wacky series has been around for years and they keep getting sillier with each iteration. Mind you, […]

Life is Feudal?

I’m always looking for the next city builder or something unique that goes beyond the mindless first person shooter. Life Is Feudal: Your Own popped on Steam and it has me intrigued. At first blush it appears to be a combination of Banished and perhaps Shroud of the Avatar. Like Banished the goal is to survive by building houses and gathering food. It sort of looks like Shroud of the Avatar with the crafting system and weapons. I guess there is some Minecraft in there because you can did, tunnel and gather resources. Maybe a sprinkling of Chivalry thrown in for good measure? The couple of trailers make it look pretty good and the still show some nice graphics and some impressive towns. It’s an Early Access game which are always fun to support. I’m going to have to look for some more gameplay videos and read some more reviews. The ones left on Steam all seem pretty favorable so […]

A Netbook, Ubuntu and a USB Drive – Installing Ubuntu from a USB

So, today’s project was to take an old Eee PC Netbook and turn it into something useful. Don’t go laughing too hard, a little machine like that still has a few uses around the house. But before going too far the current OS of Windows had to go and a new cop y of Ubuntu needed to be installed. Since this machine doesn’t have a DVD drive and I don’t have an external one, it was time to make a USB boot disk. Turns out that’s dead simple for Ubuntu. First order of business is to download Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. That’s easy enough and it comes in a convenient ISO format. With that done, all that’s required to finish the USB boot disk is to download a copy of Universal USB Installer from PendriveLinux.com. With this little tool all you do is point to the ISO file as your source and then pick your USB drive as the target. Once […]

Diamond Grillz Limited Time Building (LTB) – Building Payout and Upgrade Cost – Crime City

It’s to get started on a new LTB and this time it’s the Diamond Grillz. It’s a small building with a base cost of $90 million. This should be a decent building to add to your collection, but it won’t be available to some of the lower level IPH players. At the base price, it’ll cost $22 billion to upgrade this all the way, no small chunk of change by any means. At that level the payout is $43 million with a collection time of 12 hours. Oh yes, this is a high dollar building with a short collection time. Lots of money to be made and a ton to be lost if you don’t collect from it. If you have the modifiers you can even push this to $70 million per collection cycle. That’s pretty damn sweet. Now, for those with tons of cash and you have two of these upgrading you can get away with spending $20 billion […]

It’s time to clone and backup my drives

The only thing worse than a bad backup is no backup at all. Right now, I don’t have either. I talk a good game, but my system maintenance has been terrible. I haven’t been backing up the root drive on my main computer simply because it was too damn full. I have everything crammed onto one drive which means the backup would be a couple of gigs in size. Not only is that consuming way too much space, it’ll take too long to back it up and it will be impossible to restore. What’s the point of having a backup if it’s impossible to use? I’ve finally gotten to a place where I can make reasonable backups of my root drive. I trimmed and pruned everything off that drive so that only 100GB remains which includes the pagefile and the hibernation file. The final step is to move both of those to another drive. Even though I’ve had multiple drives […]
