🧰 Replacing the FipLab tools

With all the deleting files and removing apps, I’ve had to make a few changes. I’ve noted a few apps, that while good, haven’t seen an update in years. This is specifically true of FipLab, makers of Memory Cleaner 2/3, Window Manager, Mini Note, and a few others I have. I’m keeping Download Shuttle, although its days are numbered, and Smart Folder Cleaner, for now. I expect Download Shuttle will stop working any day now. I’m on Mojave, where the OS isn’t changing, so why worry about apps not getting updated? It’s a fair point. The apps work, and there are no issues. However, there are competitor apps getting updates and improvements. From the looks of things FipLab, which makes several decent tools, is a dead or dying company. I might be totally wrong, but when none of your apps show updates for 3 years, it gives a certain impression. Mini Note lost the ability to sync notes. It’s still […]

🏙 Having fun with my return to Pocket City 🏦

I had a real want to play a city builder, but I didn’t want to get into the labors of micromanagement. I want to build stuff! There are dozens of choices, but there is an old game that jumped out at me. Why not get back into Pocket City? It’s been a hot minute since the game came out, and since I last played, but within 5 minutes I was off and having a great time. Yes, I was playing on Easy, so it’s almost impossible to lose, but it was exactly what I was looking for. I love the art style, the quests, the upgrades to the fire and police station that send helicopters over the city. I was looking for something to jump into, and after 3 hours, I was knee deep in the quests, the money was flowing in, and I was building and upgrading with total satisfaction. For the next couple of nights, I jumped back […]

💾 Copying 16TB with CopyQueue

I know I’m behind the times with spindle drives in external enclosures, but after deleting terabytes worth of duplicates and unneeded data, I need to move huge chunks of data. When you have tens of thousands of files, ranging in size from 200k to 10GB, how do you reliably move all that? Well, duh, you use Finder. Or use one of the many products with the word Finder in the name. Or, you use one of the dozen tools with the name Commander. That works when moving a few files. They’re fine transferring files from one SSD to another, but this is an older Mac Pro with spindle drives inside. There’s also spindle drives in enclosures. SSDs are awesome, but there is no such thing as a $99 8TB SSD. That’s the price of hard drives, so that’s what I have. The problem is, since I have large blocks of free space, I want to consolidate files and reorganize. I’m […]

😈 Diablo IV? No gracias

I was taken by surprise. I didn’t realize another entry into the Diablo series was in the works. After nearly getting booed off the stage for Diablo Immortal, which I thought was Diablo IV, I figured Blizzard was busy keeping their heads down with the D2 Remaster to let the heat die down. Turns out they were working on D4 at the same time. Imagine my surprise to not only hear there was a new Diablo, but that it was already released. Maybe it will make up for the reskin of WoW, that was Diablo 3. That game was a total mess. I didn’t hear a single good word about it when it first released and the auction house was an abomination. It apparently got better with dozens of updates and DLC, but it’s still crap compared to D2. So, what about Diablo IV? First of all the story sounds ridiculous. Maybe it’s better when presented in the game, but […]

🥽 My vision of Apple Vision Pro

To put it simply, I’m not a fan of VR. I find it an interesting gimmick and distraction. It’s the kind of hardware you buy to impress your friends, use a couple times when they come over, then stash it away. It has its purpose, but it’s limited in scope and depth. My opinion changed when I saw Apple Vision Pro. I’m still not an advocate of VR, but I immediately saw a hundred uses for their spatial computing headset. I’ve seen VR demos before and never felt compelled by them. During WWDC 2023, I said, “Damn, that would be cool!” multiple times. And I meant it. It wasn’t just spur of the moment excitement. As I read more about the device, I see those same possibilities. I may not be thinking of the target audience, at least not the current target audience. What if you took the Apple Vision and put it in the hands of someone who doesn’t […]
