Winx DVD Copy Pro Halloween discount for $9.95 by Digiarty

So there are lots of DVD Rippers and Copy tools around, but getting a good one that will actually stay updated usually sets you back a small fortune. I just came across this great deal for Winx DVD Copy Pro by Digiarty for $9.95 as part of a massive Halloween sale. Yes, Halloween is over, but the spirit lives on! If you go to the main Digiarty page you can see the Promotions menu which gives a good deal on the Winx DVD Ripper, but DVD Copy Pro isn’t on there. I actually found this on the page about their Blu Ray player. You can jump straight to it and pick up the full version which includes all planned updates. If you like, you can grab the Giveway copy which will certainly work for now, provided you install it quick enough, but it doesn’t come with any updates. $10 is a heck of a deal for a DVD cloning tool. It’s time to clone and backup my drives

The only thing worse than a bad backup is no backup at all. Right now, I don’t have either. I talk a good game, but my system maintenance has been terrible. I haven’t been backing up the root drive on my main computer simply because it was too damn full. I have everything crammed onto one drive which means the backup would be a couple of gigs in size. Not only is that consuming way too much space, it’ll take too long to back it up and it will be impossible to restore. What’s the point of having a backup if it’s impossible to use? I’ve finally gotten to a place where I can make reasonable backups of my root drive. I trimmed and pruned everything off that drive so that only 100GB remains which includes the pagefile and the hibernation file. The final step is to move both of those to another drive. Even though I’ve had multiple drives […]

O&O DiskImage Pro 8.5 on Sale for $14

I got this as an email, O&O DiskImage Pro is on sale for a mere $14. O&O is one of those tools that allows you to backup the files on your machine as well as clone the entire drive. One of the cool features is you can make a backup of a drive and then mount that file like it was drive. Even if the drive is gone you can still work with it like it was installed. I’ve also used DiskImage to clone a drive before I  did a replacement. I upgraded from a small 500GB drive to a massive 3TB system drive and I was able to transfer the entire OS and all my apps without incident. I probably should have just reinstalled, but I figured it would be more fun to risk everything and just clone the whole machine. Funny thing is, it worked no problem. I’ve also used Acronis True Image and I’m not sure which […]

VirtualBox Cannot register the image because UUID already exists

I’ve ran into a snag with VirtualBox. I made some images on my work laptop and when I try to load them on my home desktop machine I run into the following error: Cannot register the image ‘C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso’ with UUID ‘{4a16c3ed-691e-4878-9576-d1113bc5a699}’ because a ‘C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso’ with UUID {…} already exists It turns out the Guest Additions ISO is loaded for one of the images, but I have no idea which one since UUIDs mean nothing to me. Basically, the Virtual Machine won’t load and there doesn’t seem to be a whole you can do about it from the UI. After doing some digging I believe I have a way to get around the problem quite easily. Go into the directory where the Virtual Machine file is located and open the .VBOX file. It’s an XML and is easily read by an editor such as Notepad++. Look for the line: <HardDisk uuid="{4a16c3ed-691e-4878-9576-d1113bc5a699}" location="Windows 2008.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal"/> as in this example: […]

Converting A Physical Hard Drive To A Virtual Hard Disk

At first glance the project seemed easy – clone the physical hard drive inside a server and restore it into VirtualBox so as to use the virtual copy. Turns out, it doesn’t work the way I envisioned it in my head. All the latest software made promises of one-click cloning and on the fly conversion to VHD. But in the end, after three days of trying, I’m scrapping this project. I just can’t seem to get it to work. I tried using the latest software like O&O DiskImage 6, which listed VHD as one of the output formats. Well, it outputs to VHD alright, but that image doesn’t load. I cloned the drive without incident, but for the life of me I can’t that server to boot in a virtual environment. I created a VHD, I restored to a new VDI, I installed a new OS and tried the restore from there, I used a boot CD and restored from […]
