Are these the signs that Microsoft is struggling?

First, Microsoft has announced that to be more agile, lean and mean, there will be an across board restructuring of the company. "The end goal is to bring products to market faster and encourage users to adopt Microsoft technologies on a variety of devices." To me, this sounds like two things. One, Microsoft is in trouble. Two, layoffs are coming. You never go through a re-org or realignment and keep the same number of people as when you started. Additionally, as another sign of weakness, the Surface RT has turned in some weak sales numbers and now Microsoft has a surplus. What do you do with a product nobody wants? Put it on sale of course! Rumor has it the price will drop by $150. And just to throw it out there, I don’t think the new Xbox One is going to make as big a splash as the previous versions. Even though Microsoft backpedaled on all the foolish ideas […]

Surface Pro just doesn’t hold my interest

With the release of the Surface Pro I went to check it out and see what it had to offer over the somewhat neutered RT version. I walked away thinking the Surface Pro is extremely underwhelming and a complete waste of money. It’s a machine that seems to be confused with it’s identity and what it wants to do in life. Is it a tablet, is it a laptop? Quite frankly, it’s not good at being either. The Surface Pro is a laptop jammed into a different case. But it’s not a good laptop. Nor is it a good tablet. You all but have to use the attached keyboard and mouse to use any of the built in apps. Word, Outlook, etc are not built to be manipulated through touch or gestures. You have to use them the same way you would on a desktop. What’s the point? By contrast, the apps inside Android and iOS have been built with […]

Out of 64GB, Surface lets you use 23GB

Out of the 64GB storage space available in the Surface only 23GB will be available for use. The OS, Recovery Partition and installed apps will steal 41GB of space. Holy hell, this thing is supposed to be optimized for tablets? This is the stripped down version of Windows 8? My ass!! The Pro version is just as bad, with 45GB going to the OS and apps. This is worse than a pre-configured PC. What part of a 40+GB OS is portable? Microsoft’s 64GB Surface Pro will only have 23GB usable storage

Surface Pro will fall flat on it’s face Feb 9th

The new Surface Pro PC in tablet form factor will be on the streets February 9th for the low price of $899. The Pro will offer support for Windows applications rather than just the scaled down RT apps. But is this really a worthwhile thing? None of the apps are actually written to be Touch enabled. I’ve seen people use the Surface and you still have to manipulate it like a PC. You have to use the attached keyboard and mouse to scroll the pointer around the screen and click objects. It’s not gesture based, it’s not completely Touch aware and it doesn’t appear to be catching on. Samsung has already said it’s not making Surface tablets and other PC makers are at odd with Microsoft over what to build. Windows 8 has not been the Golden Child MS said it would be and acceptance is coming in very slowly. I see iPads and Android tablets everywhere, but Surface tablets […]

Let me gaze upon the Microsoft Surface

I just had my first glimpse at the Microsoft Surface and it’s actually a pretty nice looking device. The screen looks very similar to the Kindle Fire screen. The aspect ration is 16×10, which doesn’t look bad, but feels a tiny bit elongated to me. The keyboard/cover combination is pretty nice. It even has a mouse pad built in. The images are bright and Angry Birds looked quite nice. We were having some network problems so we couldn’t put it through it’s paces, but overall it’s much better than I expected. The Windows 8 UI is certainly geared more towards the tablet, but I’m still not sure I like it. The live tabs don’t look too bad, but they don’t look good everywhere. The app store seems hard to navigate and sort of came across as a beta version. Some of the touch features didn’t come across as responsive as they should. I did like that the keyboard could snap […]
