Does Peerblock still have a use?

I was reading over some articles discussing Peerblock and there was a lot of back and forth about it’s usefulness. Most comments were directed toward file sharing, which I agree, it won’t do much, but what about in general terms, does Peerblock still serve a purpose? It depends on what you plan to do. As mentioned, it’s ability to block peers while sharing files doesn’t really help these days. It’s only as good as the list it downloads and considering hosts change their configuration at will, that’s not going to do much. Further, once you make a connection to a peer, your IP address is known. From a browser point of view, the features of Peerblock can be found in tools like Adblock Plus and Ghostery. You can also install BlockSite if you find yourself being directed to annoying advertisers. So is Peerblock worth running? In a simple sense it can be used to block advertisers from the system level […]

The passing of Slysoft and AnyDVD

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Slysoft, makers of AnyDVD as well as CloneDVD, CloneDVDMobile and VirtualCloneDrive has called it quits. Not only are they not making or selling their programs anymore, but the website has been reduced to a simple message thanking their customers for support over the years. I’m deeply saddened by this news, not just because a useful program has been taken away, but that the bully tactics of the MPAA have claimed another victim. I still hold that we as consumers have the right to backup our movies and this is heavy blow to those rights. Yes, there are plenty of people who collect and store Netflix on their hard drives, but as anyone who’s purchased a kids movie or a rare DVD knows, making a backup is essential. While there are other products like Winx DVD Copy and DVDFab, it’s a damn shame that AnyDVD has crumbled. In my opinion it was the best […]

You may get Windows 10 whether you like it or not

I just came across this article in Forbes that says just annoying the hell out of you to upgrade to Windows 10 isn’t enough. Microsoft has designs to force you to upgrade to Windows 10 whether you like it or not. Since Windows 10 is a free upgrade, what could possibly be the problem? There are two major topics that give me cause for concern. The first is, I’ve seen and read far too many things about all the tracking and spying Windows 10 does. If the details are correct, it tracks just about everything you do. I don’t want Windows tracking everything I type, the images I open, the videos I play, the music I listen to. I don’t need Microsoft knowing which games are in my Steam library and how many times I visit Amazon. That might be a dash of paranoia, but the fact Microsoft is logging computer usage makes me concerned and isn’t something I need in […]

Adding Ghostery to my list of Privacy Tools

The other day I added Self-Destructing Cookies as an extension to Firefox, which has turned out to be a fantastic and a must have cookie deletion tool. It works exceptionally well and cleans out unwanted and unneeded cookies as soon as I close the tab. Now I’ve decided to beef up my browser privacy by adding Ghostery to stop cookies, trackers and web beacons before they can find a place to roost on my machine. After install, you get to choose which Trackers and Cookies you want to block. You can either pick and choose, or go with Select All on both tabs to block several hundred different kinds. I went with the Block All option. I may need to use the Whitelist tab for sites like Amazon and Steam – same as I did with Self-Destructing Cookies, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. Right off the bat I saw the plugin working. All you have […]

A Slightly Deeper Look at Process Lasso

With all this talk about Process Lasso, I decided to download a copy and give it try. First things first, despite what so many people say, Process Lasso is NOT FREE. Like other "shareware", it’s free to TRY for 30 days. It keeps working after the trial period, but a majority of features are disabled and plenty of nag screens will pop up. That aside, Process Lasso is a tool built to tame your CPU and improve performance as well as invoke a Game Mode that gives your game a higher priority. All of this is to give a smoother and more responsive gaming experience. So does it work? My goal was to beef up Shroud of the Avatar, which is in Early Access and hasn’t had any optimization done. This test was to see if any improvements could be made by boosting the executable and lowering the priority of other processes. Right off the bat, Process Lasso offers a […]
