German Hefeweizen is all done

It’s beer time! So here we are with the latest creation, a German Hefeweizen. If you recall a few months back I did an American Hefeweizen which I thought was extremely good and easy drinking. This time around I put together a German Hefeweizen to see how they compare. Right off the bat you notice the German version has a stronger wheat flavor, but it still has that wonderful orange color. It’s a much stronger flavor than the American version and has significantly more kick that Blue Moon or Pyramid. I’m looking forward to this one aging a bit more. I think it’s a bit too new and raw to fully show it’s flavors. Since this is the homebrew version I also need to make sure this one is extremely cold to capture all the sediment. Overall though I think we have another fine beer making example.

Ginger Beer tasting

Back in September, I started my batch of Ginger Beer; a dark and chunky blend that included real bits of ginger. It looked dark, had floaty bits and generated an impressive head on it. When it was first crafted, I made the comment that it looked and smelled more like Guinness than anything else. Well, after opening the bottle and having a glass I stick to my original assumption. I think this Ginger Beer looks and tastes more like Guinness than any sort of ginger ale. But, is that a good thing? After the initial shock, I focused on just the flavor of the beer and I have to say I like it. It’s dark, there’s no doubt about that. The color is like a cola. There are aromatics of coffee. When you first taste it you expect a bitter finish, but it never comes. I found it very smooth and drinkable with barely any bitter finish. There is just […]

Time for some strong Ginger Beer

It’s the start of a long weekend so I’m making some hooch. I’ve had the kit for Ginger Beer for at least a month and I’ve been really anxious to try it. The American Hefeweizen, Belligerent SOB and Outback Aussie Ale are all done, so it’s time to put this one into the carboy. This kit looks and smells really interesting. There is a bag of ginger root that gets boiled into the wort. There is also an aromatic and finishing hops. The grains smell more like coffee than anything else and after the full cooking time it smelled like a coffeehouse. This beer looks really dark, much more like a Guinness than anything else. As you can tell by the picture of it going through the mesh, it’s a big chunky. The ginger root makes it look like this beer has floaters. I bet one straining isn’t going to get all of those out of there. After just a […]

The Big Labor Day Sale

Lots of games are on sale in the App Store. I think it’s time to buy Need for Speed Unleashed, even though the reviews don’t make it out to be all that good, and Monopoly Here and Now World Edition. I’m always up for a game of Monopoly. Big Fish has all their games on sale for $0.99, I’ll have to check out what they have.

The Outback Aussie Ale

My Solo Beer Venture A few weeks back I decided to fly solo and make a beer on my own. This may not have been my best decision but I did it anyway. My attempt was the Outback Aussie Ale – an auspicious selection that turned out to be an ill-tempered child with behavioral problems. Well, it is Australian (so to speak) so of course it will be difficult and dangerous. It wasn’t hard to make but it didn’t settle in the Carbuoy. It was full of vim and vigor and soon blew through the airlock and was spewing all over the floor – much like a real Australian. I spent the next day constantly replacing the airlock with a clean one. I figured this probably contaminated it and tainted the goods. Theo was good enough to come over and bottle it with me and he thought it smelled a little off. I didn’t notice that but perhaps I was […]
